Waste Paper Baskets come in all shapes and sizes. Here is one hand-woven from buff willow from Somerset in my workshop in Cornwall. This small waste paper basket is perfect for any room in the house – bedroom, bathroom, study, craft room. If taken care of it will last a lifetime. Classified as a heritage craft, the skill of willow weaving was waning in this country, but with current green living practices – willow-work fits in perfectly as a renewable and sustainable product which will last for many years. Baskets have traditionally been handed down from generation to generation. Ultimately they will biodegrade back into the earth. Buff willow is generally processed from the traditional Black Maul basket willow variety by being boiled and stripped of its bark which produces the lovely honey-coloured buff willow. This processing also makes it very light and strong making it ideal for baskets of all shapes and sizes. It has a long history of use as mail baskets, picnic baskets – as you might have seen them strapped to the back of cars of old, balloon baskets and many other traditionally made baskets which used to be part of a large basketmaking industry in this country.
